06/Carnaval

12 works | oil on canvas and collage on paper | 2013–2015

Six oil paintings and six collages celebrating the Carnival of Oruro (Bolivia), where Andean traditions banned under colonisation survived by hiding their gods behind Christian saints.

Cubism breaks down the masks of the Diablada; pop, a Latin American pop that speaks not of consumption but of the popular, gives them back the colour of the fiesta.

Artist's text

Homage to memory

It is reborn every day from the scraps they left us. From those they did not steal. From the memories of a people who have not forgotten. From an entire continent, whipped and mutilated. But always standing, never on its knees.

And so it is reborn with the strength of song and dance. The streets, dyed in vivid colours, are invaded by saints, virgins and demons. Legends of sun and moon travel through time, among crosses and swords. Shouts, dancing, joy. The living earth.

So the children of the sun and of the ear of corn march through the mountains. With the pagan song of carnival they keep alive the memory of a continent.
